Prudh: The Gentlemen’s Game

Prudh (“Prew”) is a classic-style abstract game, played on a 6x6 board with 36 stacking pieces. The pieces are all the same, and the color of each space determines who controls each piece. Players take turns moving their pieces and capturing their opponent’s pieces. The goal is to capture the most, with an endgame bonus for taking the final move.

“Prudh” is a truncation of “Prudhomme,” meaning a wise, honest, or sensible man. The game has many variations and many names in the Vinlant universe.

Below you will find links for the rules, a print-and-play board, an second board (the Catacombs design) available exclusively from DriveThruCards, and more. You can also play Prudh against the computer, with Greg Whitehead’s simulator at Down the Rathole.

You can print the Prudh board from the link above if you don’t have something that works, or you can order the fancy board from DriveThruCards. You can also play Prudh in the middle of any checkerboard, or on the checkered tablecloth at your local BBQ joint.

What is Vinlant? It’s one of several fantasy universes here at Crab Fragment Labs. The Vinlant world is an 18th century colonial-style “magic school” universe, where the Old World is filled with history and politics, and the New World is filled with mystery and magic. Whispers also lives in this world, and you can read more in the short story Into the Catacombs at the Crab Fragment Library.
